Twenty-Nine: Henrik Gone Mad

13 MAY 2011, 1:00 A.M.

Fremont, Nebraska

With his hand on the doorknob, Xavier took a deep breath. Xavier recalled the presence sauntering down the stairs toward Jaret, a knife in its ghostly hand.

Xavier opened the door and stepped into the foyer. If possible, the forces of darkness had taken even firmer hold.

“Sodomite!” The words thundered and shook the very foundations of the house.

In a controlled voice, Xavier spoke to the ghost. “You’ve no power over me. Your histrionics don’t impress me in the least. I know magic more powerful than any of your ghost antics.”

The chandelier swayed back and forth before crashing down at Xavier’s feet. Xavier looked around to find the ghost, but Henrik had hidden from him. Still, he possessed each and every one of these rooms and maintained strong power despite imprisonment in the house.

The demon curled itself around Xavier’s back and licked with a phantom tongue at his ear. “I’m going to fuck you with a stake and then throw your diseased body out the window.”

Xavier walked forward. “You’re not the proper ghost of decorum Jaret described. You used to have manners. You sound more like a bad demon from a poorly made horror movie. Crass. Uttering nonsense for shock value.”

The spirit lurched away and spun around near the ceiling.

Xavier determined to do his job quickly and leave, not wanting to engage Henrik any more than necessary.

“I’ll follow you.” Henrik hovered above as Xavier stepped into the living room. From pictures at Jaret’s apartment, he recognized the corpses of Jaret’s mother and father. In the sitting room nearby, he saw Lincoln, who had died while hammering at the window.

“You can’t follow me outside of this house, can you?”

The demon growled.

“Confirms what I thought. You’re in prison again. Just a bigger one. My friend Anne has more power than you, doesn’t she? She’s trapped you here. And guess what? I added more spells. You’re a rather feeble ghost for one trying so hard to be demonic.”

Upstairs Xavier located Jaret’s aunt and uncle, taken by surprise in the study while sitting with their grandchildren, also dead. Next, he found the bodies of the cousins. Last, he came upon Jenn’s body. Unlike the others, the spirit had placed her in the middle of the hall in peaceful repose, a dark message to Jaret despite her quiet presence. No doubt designed for Jaret to discover and send his world into chaos. Xavier would never tell anyone of this scene, not even Thomas.

Xavier gently closed Jenn’s eyes and patted her head where she lay on the carpeted floor. The spirit wailed in anger and took a stake and tried to jab it into Jenn’s cheek. Xavier enacted a spell to protect her body. Henrik tried to stab him then, to no avail.

With the sun fast approaching, Xavier had to leave. He walked down the stairs.

At the front door, Henrik spoke. “You’ll be my bitch.”

“Good night,” Xavier said.

Xavier walked out the front door and found Thomas waiting. He took Thomas’s hand and led him through Fremont to the cemetery.
